The History behind Scoff Skateboarding

Scoff officially became a company during the beginning of September 2004, but the idea for it started in Jason Huewe’s head back in 1999. The idea for Scoff started back in Jason’s 2nd year of Jr. High. Though he had no idea it would turn into what it is now. It was started simply by Jason drawing out a shoe he would like to have had. He combined his 2 of his most favorite shoes and sketched them out in every angle. It was called Ropes. Jason continued to do these things, as well as experimenting, and making his own curb wax and corrosive wax that took the grit off of your griptape.

Jason came up with an idea in his head that he should find someway to reinforced the end of his laces which he tore and destroyed every month. Eventually he found a process that worked reinforcing the end of the laces and made the laces just for his skating habits. After graduation Jr. High his parents helped him find a class that would put his active imagination to work and focus his creativity. In his first year of High School he took a class at a FSU called Entrepreneur Leadership Program (ELP). This class taught him how to build a business plan and present it to people. He was a single team competing against 21 other schools. An Over a period of 6 months he created this business plan for a shop called Scoff Board Shop. He was planning on starting an online board shop selling his reinforced skatelaces among others of his ideas and brand name products at a discount price. His freshman year he took 5th place for the best business plan out of the 21 schools that had started.

(During this learning process he asked one of his friends at school what was the first thing that wore out when he skated. His friend laughed and said “My laces!” They were all torn and knotted. A light popped in Jason’s head “THAT’S IT! I NEED TO REINFORCE THE MIDDLE!”)

He decided to change the name from Ropes to Scoff over the summer before he started his ELP. How did he come up with the name Scoff? Well one of the days he was skating over the summer Jason looked down at his shoes and thought, “Man there all scuffed up! Wait! .....Scuff, Sciff, Scoff, Sceff….Scoff sounds pretty sick!” So that’s he came up with the name. Pretty non-inspirational at first glance, but if you think about it, it fits very well for this company with everything being original and from the ground up.

During his senior year in high school he decided to go through the ELP class one more time and re-vamp the business plan even more and make it better, again going in as a single person team. He worked hard and was more prepared this time, Scoff Board Shop made it to the top 5 and took 3rd place. Jason won a $600 check for winning third and then used part of that money to start his business a few months later in September. Starting in June though he began testing his laces and sent over 20 pairs nation wide for normal skaters to test out and get their feedback on to see how he could improve them and get their feedback.

He then started spreading the name of Scoff over the internet using a site called Xanga. And it started from there, though after some thinking Jason decided he wanted Scoff to become a company and not a shop, and then changed the name to Scoff Skateboarding.

Since then he has had a vision for Scoff a way of doing things and approaching things differently. “Scoff is skateboarding. We try to set an example and encourage others instead of bringing them down or spreading stupid lies or truths, which could harm someone. We want to build up our fellow skaters no matter if they have a strange style or can’t skate at all yet. If were there for them now and keep them skating forward, our hope is that they will increase the positive outlook on skating, and no matter what someone might say, you can’t take away their love for skating.”

As for the inspiration towards Scoff products, Jason strives to make products that meets a skaters need, to fix some of the problems that are not being addressed. “Everyone is practically doing boards so why not start with the smaller things and work our way up. There is more than one way to find a solution to one problem.”

So that’s the main history behind Scoff, putting a positive outlook back into skating and pushing skateboarding as far as it pushes us!
